Understanding & Estimating Square Roots

In this activity, students will be building squares of varying areas to make sense of and eventually estimate square roots. Students learning about square roots benefit from making sense of the meaning by building squares with specific areas, then looking at the side or root of these squares. Estimating square roots of numbers between perfect squares by building and estimating fractional parts helps build number sense and allows students to make connections between these ideas.
