The Intersection
In this activity, students predict the point of intersection for a system of two linear equations, at first without a grid, and then later with one. With the grid in play, students are able to use the slope of the lines (whether formally, or informally) to improve the accuracy of their predictions. This activity serves as an example of the usefulness of mathematical structure in general (in this case, the coordinate grid) and a potential launching point into discussions about rate of change for linear functions.
