Comparing Irrational Numbers
In this activity, students use finite decimal approximations of irrational numbers to compare the size of irrational numbers and to place them in their approximate locations on a number line. Students should have previous experience: (1) using long division to find decimal approximations of fractions, and (2) approximating square roots by considering the squares of adjacent integers, tenths, hundredths, etc. If students use digital tools to automatically calculate the value of these expressions, they are unlikely to learn about the structure of the expressions or how to approximate them. So we recommend that you require handwritten work on this activity.
