Baseball WAR | April 17, 2019
This graph, which originally appeared in a New York Times article, includes highly-paid baseball players. It compares their relative value to their team using salary and the baseball statistic WAR -- Wins Above Replacement. A player's WAR value is claimed to be the number of additional wins his team has achieved above the number of expected team wins if that player were substituted with a replacement-level player. The greater the WAR, the better the player. Ask your students to look closely at this graph and discuss what they notice, what they wonder, and ask what headline they would write for the graph. To join an online conversation about the graph moderated by the American Statistical Association, visit the New York Times Learning Network's "What's Going On in this Graph?" website on Wednesday between 9AM and 2PM Eastern.
