Are They Congruent?

Students use rigid transformations to make arguments for why two figures are or are not congruent. They learn that two figures with commonalities, such as having the same area or having corresponding side lengths that are equal, does not guarantee congruence. Note: This lesson includes a paper supplement.

Learning goals: Learning Goals • Decide whether two figures on a grid are congruent by applying transformations. • Understand that all corresponding sides in a pair of congruent polygons have the same length, but that congruent corresponding sides does not necessarily mean the polygons are congruent. Materials • Geometry toolkits (particularly tracing paper)
