Students are introduced to transformations of plane figures and are asked to describe these movements in everyday language. While students are not expected to use formal math vocabulary yet, this lesson provides the intellectual need for agreeing upon common language and gives students a chance to experiment with different ways of describing some transformations in the plane (MP6). Note: A paper version of this lesson is also available.

Learning goals: Learning Goals • Describe translations, rotations, and reflections using informal language (e.g., “slide,” “turn left,” etc.) Materials In all of the lessons in this unit, students should have access to their geometry toolkits, which should contain tracing paper, graph paper, colored pencils, scissors, a ruler, a protractor, and an index card. Students may not need all (or even any) of these tools to solve a particular problem. However, to make strategic choices about when to use which tools (MP5), students need to have opportunities to make those choices.
