MARS: Interpreting Equations CCSS 6.EE
From Mathematics Assessment Project CLASSROOM CHALLENGES A Formative Assessment Lesson COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS 6.EE: Apply and extend previous understandings of arithmetic to algebraic expressions. Reason about and solve one-variable equations and inequalities. Represent and analyze quantitative relationships between dependent and independent variables. Mathematics Assessment Resource Service University of Nottingham & UC Berkeley For more details, visit: http://map.mathshell.org This task has 3 parts: 1. pre-assessment (not graded) 2. matching task (done with partner, consider not grading it or give credit for completion) 3. assessment (graded) The full PDF of this lesson with instructional support: https://www.map.mathshell.org/download.php?fileid=1604 This is my normal routine for a MARS task like this, about 3 class periods (most of it is devoted to part 2): - assign pre-assessment in class, set timer for 15 minutes, emphasize that it's not graded, no worries if not finished - immediately go into part 2, the matching task, randomly assign students in groups of 2 or 3 - go over the task as a whole class, facilitate class discussion - go over the pre-assessment as a whole class, facilitate class discussion - assign part 3, the assessment - based on how students did on the assessment, consider next steps
