Measurement with Standard Units - 2nd Grade
This activity aligns with the following 2nd Grade Math standards: MGSE2.MD.2 Measure the length of an object twice, using length units of different measurements; describe how the two measurements relate to the size of the unit chosen. Understand the relative size of units in different systems of measurement. For example, an inch is longer than a centimeter. (Students are not expected to convert between systems of measurement.) MGSE2.MD.3 Estimate lengths using units of inches, feet, centimeters, and meters. MGSE2.MD.4 Measure to determine how much longer one object is than another, expressing the length difference in terms of a standard length unit. In this activity, students will explore the concept that objects can be measured with standard units to determine a length. Students have the opportunity to measure objects in the activity as well estimate the length of objects. Lastly, students determine an appropriate measurement that would most efficiently measure objects.
