1 Can Be Anything
Students consider the idea that we can count music in more than one way, and for that matter, 1 or the 'whole', can be anything... 1 can be big, 1 can be small... it just depends on how you want to think about it and what's the most useful. There are cases where thinking about rhythms in terms of 1, ½, and ¼ is easier than thinking about it in terms of ¼, 1/8th, and 1/16ths... Students are challenged to create their own beats in multiple systems of counting and convert between them!
