Grade 2: Ways to Make 10

Students build toward fluency within 10 by looking for and making use of patterns as they add together two numbers to make 10. As they find pairs that make 10, some students may see the Commutative Property of Addition as showing two different pairs that make 10, whereas others may see it as showing the same pair (e.g., 9 + 1 and 1 + 9). This can be considered an opportunity to discuss similarities and differences in these pairs. Students notice that they can use patterns or other strategies, such as counting on or counting back, to find numbers that make 10 with a given number. Knowing all decompositions of 10 will be helpful for when students add and subtract within 20.
