Exploring Perimeter of Rectangles

Students build rectangles with a given perimeter. Each side of the rectangle makes a different sound based on its length, helping students engage in multi-sensory learning. This activity is designed for 3rd grade students.

This warm up and quick routine takes about 5-10 minutes and can be used in or outside of a Math block. It is designed to be flexibly implemented in your day! Today's Goals • Practice building rectangles with the same perimeter. • Find all rectangles with whole-number side lengths with a given perimeter. • Language Goal: Explain how to construct a rectangle with a given perimeter. (Speaking and Listening) Prep Checklist • Click Present to show this activity to the class or a small group. • On the Warm-Up screens, have students predict the perimeter of the rectangle and then reveal the actual perimeter. • On the Activity screens, have students work in small groups to discuss rectangles that have a given perimeter. Invite students to share their ideas as you model building students' suggested rectangles.
