Switching Beginning Consonant Sounds: Level 1 (CVC)
In this activity, kindergarten students practice phonemic awareness by switching the initial consonant in CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant), CVCC and CCVCC words to form new words. This exercise can be used flexibly throughout the day–from small groups to morning routines–to help students understand sound manipulation, enhancing their reading and decoding skills. When your students are proficient in switching beginning sounds for CVC words, they can move onto Switching Middle Vowel Sounds: Level 1 (CVC) or Switching Beginning Consonant Sounds: Level 2 (CVCC). This activity got a really wonderful update on October 24! You can now assign this activity to students or click on the screens below to teach with your class or small group.
