6.8 Unit Overview
Students visualize data using dot plots and histograms, before calculating measures of center — mean and median — and measures of variability — mean absolute deviation (MAD), range, and interquartile range (IQR). They construct box plots in addition to interpreting these measures in context, relating the shape and features of a distribution to the best choice of measures.

Learning goals: Sub-Unit 1: Visualizing Data (Lessons 1–6) • Use dot plots and histograms to make claims about data. • Create dot plots and histograms to visualize data. • Describe data sets using terms such as shape, center, and spread. Sub-Unit 2: Measuring Data: Mean and MAD (Lessons 7–10 + Practice Day + Quiz) • Calculate the mean and mean absolute deviation (MAD) of a data set. • Interpret the mean and MAD in the context of a data set. Sub-Unit 3: Measuring Data: Median and IQR (Lessons 11–16 + Practice Day) • Calculate the quartiles, interquartile range (IQR), and range of a data set. • Create and use box plots to make claims about data. • Compare and contrast the mean and median as measures of center. • Interpret the median and IQR in the context of a data set.
