Middle School: Weather Vocabulary Game

Students play a vocabulary game while studying weather. This Bite Sized Science Moment takes about 5–15 minutes and can be used within a Science block or at any time. It is designed to be flexibly implemented in your day!

Today's Goals • Define and practice using terms common in a lesson about weather. • Language Goal: Students will read hints (non-example, example, image, and definition) and discuss these hints with their group to come up with the vocabulary term. (Reading, Speaking, and Listening) Prep Checklist • Put students into groups of 4–5. • Click "Present" when you are ready to start the lesson. Lesson Preview • Students are given a mystery vocabulary word. • They reveal a series of hints to help them figure out the mystery vocabulary word. • The students that get the mystery vocabulary word correct first earn a point. Vocabulary Terms and Definitions air mass: a body of gas in Earth’s atmosphere with similar temperature, humidity and pressure atmosphere: the gasses that surround Earth or another planet atmospheric pressure: the force that the weight of the air puts on Earth climate: the typical weather in a place over a long period of time convection: in a liquid or a gas, the natural tendency of hotter material to rise and colder material to sink resulting in the transfer of heat Coriolis Effect: how Earth's spin causes winds to curve in different directions in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres high pressure system: the amount of force on Earth’s surface from the air is more than normal low pressure system: the amount of force on Earth’s surface from the air is less than normal ocean current: the movement of ocean water in a series of continuous paths in specific directions precipitation: water that falls to Earth as rain, snow, sleet, or hail
