Grade 5 Math Lessons
Teach volume, fraction multiplication, decimal operations, and more with these free 5th grade lessons and activities from our complete, standards-aligned math program, Amplify Desmos Math.
Grades: 5th Grade

Unit Cubes and Volume
Students are introduced to the concept of volume, measure volume with different units, and determine the volumes of figures composed of rectangular prisms. Your students will observe real-world examples of volume with barges, and they'll learn to compose and decompose figures with cubes.
- Which Is Largest?
- Packing the Barge
- Putting It Together
- Figures Made of Prisms
Fractions as Quotients and Fraction Multiplication
Students represent and explain the relationship between division and fractions. They solve problems involving division of whole numbers that lead to answers that are fractions. These lessons can be taught on their own or together. If you teach the lessons together, your class will start with Investigate: Sharing Sandwiches, where they'll meet Sage and explore what it means to share–and how to overcome their own frustration when things don't go according to plan. See the full sub-unit here.
- Investigate: Sharing Sandwiches
- Sharing More Sandwiches
- Dance Breaks
- Division Story Problems
- Making Generalizations
Multiplying and Dividing Fractions
Students multiply fractions numerically, determine products of unit fractions, make generalizations about fraction multiplication, and compare products. Your students will solve area problems with mixed numbers by installing turf for a playpen. They'll even see what happens to a number when multiplied by a fraction greater than, less than, or equal to 1 by putting stuffed animals through the Re-size-inator! These lessons can be taught on their own or together. If you teach the lessons together, your class will start with Investigate: Folding Paper, where they'll travel to an animal shelter to see math concepts, like equipartitioning a quilt, in the real world. See the full sub-unit here.
- Investigate: Folding Paper
- Parts of Parts
- One Part of One Part
- Making Food
- Installing Turf
- Rows and Columns
- Messy Multiplication
- Applying Fraction Multiplication
- Chores at Animal Haven
- Quinton, The Bison
- Hungry, Hungry Puppies
Multiplication and Division with Multi-Digit Whole Numbers
Students explore using the standard algorithm to multiply multi-digit numbers, and strategize partial quotients using place value understanding.
- Partial Products Everywhere
- How Do They Compare?
- Emptying the Water Tank
Place Value Patterns and Decimal Operations
Students understand how to read, write, compare, and round decimals. They investigate place vale and fraction understanding to name decimals values beyond the thousandths place, how to recognize and represent them, and how to round decimals to the nearest whole number, tenth, and hundredth. These lessons can be taught on their own or together. If you teach the lessons together, your class will start with Investigate: Numbers Between Numbers, where they'll meet a school filled with creative kids: Students designing miniature toys, measuring clothes for animals, or drawing comic books! They'll explore the numbers between two whole numbers. See the full sub-unit here.
- Investigate: Numbers Between Numbers
- What Is One Thousandth?
- Say What?
- The Claw
- Selling Collectibles
- Which Way Down the Mountain?
- Rounding Races
More Decimal and Fraction Operations
Students deepen their understanding of decimals and fractions by representing powers of 10 in different ways–such as exponential form, multiplication expressions, and in standard form. They'll practice multiplying and dividing numbers and decimals by powers of 10.
- Monarch Butterflies
- All About That Base
- Powers of 10 Parade
- The Fraction Challenge
- The Decimal Challenge
Shapes and Coordinate Plane
Students understand the locations of points in two-dimensional space. They learn how to locate and plot points on a coordinate grid, and write ordered pairs to represent that location. Our community of educators and students especially love the lesson Bullseye!
- Creating a Coordinate System
- Bullseye!
- Coordinating Satellite Repairs
- Battle Boats
