Grade 2 Math Lessons
Students work with addition and subtraction strategies, collect and analyze data, and measure length, time, and money. These lessons come from our complete, standards-aligned math program, Amplify Desmos Math.
Grades: 2nd Grade

Working With Data and Solving Comparison Problems
Students build fluency by adding and subtracting within 10. Your class will explore numbers with a variety of tools, and notice patterns with subtraction and addition expressions. They'll use pairs of numbers to help Benita's millipede eat leaves, and count fish in an aquarium to represent comparisons with tape diagrams!
- Exploring Within 10
- Ways to Make 10
- Awesome Aquariums
Adding and Subtracting Within 100
Students use addition and subtraction strategies to find the values of groups of coins. They'll find combinations of coins that make given values, and solve story problems involving money–like buying toys or opening up their own stand at the block party! These lessons are designed to be taught alone or in sequence. If you'd like to teach the lessons together, your class will start with Investigate: Activities at the Block Party, to explore how the community works together to raise money for their library. See the full sub-unit here.
- Investigate: Activities at the Block Party
- Discovering Coins (Part 1)
- How Much Money?
- Discovering Coins (Part 2)
- The Toy Stand
- The Craft Stand at the Block Party
Measuring Length
Students understand how to measure length. They'll measure the lengths of animals in centimeters and compare their data! Your class will will learn about line plots and how they can organize data–and then create their own line plots.
- Lengths of Jungle Animals
- Messy Measurements
- Bracelets and Wristbands
Addition and Subtraction on the Number Line
Students explore representing whole numbers within 100 on a number line. Your class will understand how number lines are helpful, how numbers increase to the right and decrease to the left, and they'll estimate the location of whole numbers in order to plan seeds. These lessons are designed to be taught alone or in sequence. If you teach these lessons together, students start with the narrative lesson Investigate: Where Am I? to contextualize why it can be important to organize numbers in a line! See the full sub-unit here.
- Investigate: Where Am I?
- Time to Line Up!
- What’s That Number?
- Greater Than, Less Than, or Equal To
- In Full Bloom
Numbers to 1,000
Students build their understanding of place value to compose, represent, and compare three-digit numbers. They'll compose and decompose three-digit numbers to read, write, and represent them in different forms. These lessons are designed to be taught alone or in sequence! If you teach these lessons together, your class will start with the narrative lesson, Investigate: A Mistake in Mom's Office, to compare different three-digit addresses that led to a mixup at the post-office! See the full sub-unit here.

- Mail Call!
- A New Representation
- What’s Your Name?
- All the Ways!
Geometry
Students reason with shapes and their attributes and partition shapes into equal parts. Your class will travel to a museum and create art by making their own shapes and categorizing them! They'll explain their thinking, compare shape attributes, measure side lengths of shapes, and measure different three-dimensional shapes with a ruler.
- Frame It!
- Measure It, Draw It
- More to Measure
Adding and Subtracting Within 1,000
Add and subtract within 1,000 using an understanding of place value, the relationship between addition and subtraction, and properties of operations. Your class will help Bea cross the river by using number patterns to place turtles to fill the gaps, and use their understanding of place value to count berries–which Eli the skunk will bake into a pie!
- Turtle Hurdles
- There’s Something About Berries
- Baking With Skunk
Equal Groups
Students work with equal and odd groups of objects to gain foundations for multiplication. They'll practice sharing by splitting amounts of objects into 2 equal groups and pairs. Your class will learn to represent even numbers as the sum of 2 equal addends.
- Can You Share?
- Everybody, Find A Partner!
- Is It Even or Odd?
Personalized Learning and Intervention
Differentiate instruction for your students and make math accessible with targeted small group intervention and personalized practice!
