Grade 3 Math Lessons

Teach multiplication, geometry, and measurement. Students work with area and perimeter concepts using real-world examples. These lessons come from our complete, standards-aligned math program, Amplify Desmos Math.

Grades: 3rd Grade

• Introduction to Multiplication

  Students represent and solve multiplication problems involving equal groups and arrays. Your class will explore the commutative property of multiplication by scooping frozen yogurt into arrays of cones. They'll learn to represent and interpret scaled picture graphs and bar graphs of their favorite animals and activities–and solve two-step problems along the way.

• Area and Multiplication

  Students understand area as the amount of space a shape covers without gaps. Your students will explore and measure area with pattern blocks and tiles, and even build their own garden sheds. These lessons can be taught on their own or together. • Adding Within 1,000

  Students fluently add within 1,000 using algorithms based on place value and properties of operations. Your students will help a panda discover patterns of bamboo, compare base-ten diagrams, and learn to add strategically. These lessons can be taught on their own or together. If you teach the lessons together, your class will start with Investigate: Creating a Photo Gallery, where they'll meet Max–a photographer–and help him arrange his 999 photographs. • Relating Multiplication to Division

  Students understand division as an unknown-factor problem and use multiplication or division strategies to represent and solve division problems. Your class will use cooking recipes to identify multiplication and division equations that represent the same story problem. They'll use familiar facts to identify unknown factors and practice one-digit multiplication facts to improve their fluency.

• Fractions as Numbers

  Students make sense of fractions as numbers and reason about fractions using area and number line diagrams. They'll deepen their understanding of fractions by locating them on a number line, including those less than and greater than 1, and identify and locate fractions that are equal to whole numbers.

• Measurement Data on Line Plots

  Students learn to measure lengths using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch to generate data for making a line plot. They'll measure the lengths of chickens and objects around them, write fractions greater than 1 as a mixed number, and create line plots that display length measurement data. These lessons can be taught on their own or together. If you teach the lessons together, your class will start with Egg-cellent Pick, where they'll help Sasha pick a prize-winning chick by looking at the measurements of three different chickens! • Two-Dimensional Shapes and Perimeter

  Students identify and define attributes of different quadrilaterals and explore the perimeter of two-dimensional shapes. They'll travel in a hot air balloon and describe the shapes they see far below! Your class will learn to describe and compare shapes and their attributes–from rectangles, squares, rhombuses and more.
