Grade 1 Math Lessons

Students count to 120, add, subtract, and understand place value. They explore basic geometry, learning to identify and describe shapes. These lessons come from our complete, standards-aligned math program, Amplify Desmos Math.

• Adding, Subtracting, and Working With Data

  Students organize data and add and subtract within 10. They'll learn to sort images into categories and relate counting to addition and subtracting. They'll explore addition and subtraction story problems, like how eating food at a picnic takes away. In Leaping Lily Pads!, your class will help a frog hop up and down a number line of lily pads to catch a fly.

• Addition and Subtraction Story Problems

  Students represent and solve story problems using addition and subtraction within 10. Your class will be engaged as they learn to subtract by picking guavas from a tree, and how to add by planting for vegetables in a garden! These lessons are designed to be taught alone or in sequence! If you teach these lessons in order, your class will start with Investigate: Let's Grow! • Adding and Subtracting Within 20

  Students explore representing teen numbers and make use of the 10 + n structure of teen numbers to add within 20. Students will represent teen numbers in different ways and solve story problems, like figuring out how many cats can fit into the rows of a roller coaster cart!

  Students represent and use the base-ten structure of two-digit multiples of 10 to add and subtract multiples of They'll organize and count objects (like Yara's 60 guitar picks) and share strategies with each other for adding and taking away groups of ten. These lessons are designed to be taught alone or in sequence! If you teach these in order, your class will start with Investigate: Game Points, where they'll meet different collectors and see how they organize and count their collections–like guitar picks and cards. • Adding Within 100

  Students develop strategies for finding sums within 100. They''ll explore place value, and how adding tens to a two-digit number is different from adding ones to a two-digit number. Your class will add amounts of tens and ones to a two digit-number to help deliver the right amount of fruit from the park! These lessons are designed to be taught alone or in sequence! If you teach these lessons in order, your students will start with Investigate: Squashes at the Playground. Strange squashes fall down onto the streets of Faraway, and your class will watch as the townspeople collect them all. Your students will help them by finding the sum of a two-digit multiple of 10 and a one-digit number. See the full sub-unit here.

• Measuring Lengths of Up to 120 Length Units

  Students measure the lengths of objects. They'll measure the wingspans of birds and learn to use non-standard length units. They'll count to find the total amount of length units needed and record the lengths with written numerals.

  Students learn to partition and recognize shapes as halves and fourths. They'll help Pia partition food (such as a rectangular bread) in equal parts so that her friends are happy. Your class will understand how to describe equal parts and compare the sizes of fourths and halves.
